Hope and Expectation

The bright sword sharp and keen
Carrying you through your darkest hours
Lifting your spirit with faith and courage
In an instant, cuts you to the core

Life without hope is futile
Life without expectation is pointless
But what if your hope is dashed
And your expectation is thwarted

Will you pick up the pieces
And put together a semblance of hope?
Will you gather up your expectation
And hold it up for the world to see?

Or will you quietly brush them aside
And nurse the wound in your heart
Forsaking the coming hurt
Choosing instead solitude
